The Estate and Its Grape Varieties

Our grape varieties include Gamay, Chardonnay, Aligoté, and Pinot Noir.

We produce wines under several appellations, in both red and white: Chiroubles, Beaujolais-Villages, Bourgogne, Mercurey Village, Mercurey Premier Cru, and Crémant.

Our Bourgogne, Mercurey, and Mercurey Premier Cru appellations are grown on clay-limestone soils, characteristic of the great wines of Burgundy.

Our Gamay vines are located in the Beaujolais crus, on the terroirs of Chiroubles and Villié-Morgon. The granitic soils of these plots are typical of the great Beaujolais appellations.

Geographic Location

Located in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, just a few kilometers from Mercurey (25 km south of Beaune), our winery can be found in the center of Rully.

Our vineyard estate stretches from Villié-Morgon to Mercurey.

The entire estate covers around twenty hectares, with 15 hectares currently under cultivation.

A Wine Estate with a History…

Telling the story of Domaine de Cardon means speaking not only about a wine estate, but above all about the family behind its creation. Domaine de Cardon is, first and foremost, a family story.

Spanish Origins

Established in Dracy-le-Fort for several generations, the De Cardon de Sandrans family traces its origins back to 12th-century Spain, under the name Cardona.

In the 15th century, during military campaigns led by the King of Spain in Italy (Lucca), Folch Cardona married a descendant of the Strozzi family of Lucca. This union produced several sons, two of whom—Horace and Folch—later moved to Lyon, France. Having actively participated in the defense of Lyon against the Reformation, King Henry IV granted them the Barony of Sandrans, in the Ain region (La Dombes).

The Family Settles Near Lyon

Deeply rooted in the Lyon region, the De Cardon de Sandrans family acquired, among other properties, the Domaine de Roche Cardon on the outskirts of Lyon. In the 19th century, the family moved from the Château de Sandrans to their estate in Dracy-le-Fort, Burgundy.

The first vines were planted there and cultivated—on a modest scale—until the mid-20th century, when the property was divided and the vineyards were uprooted.

In 2012, their descendant Frédérique de Cardon de Sandrans decided to revive the family’s tradition and values by re-establishing a wine estate.

Surrounded by passionate friends who shared the same values, Domaine de Cardon was founded in April 2013. After purchasing a winery in Rully at the end of 2015, the estate produced its first vintage in 2016.

And that… is another story.
